fearsomesymmetry:

So, I learned something new today.  Let’s file this under The Sceince of Weight Loss, shall we?
Fat mouse, skinny mouse.  The skinny mouse on the right has leptin receptors, whereas the fat mouse does not.
Leptin is a protein hormone that’s directly linked to appetite inhibition by counteracting other neurotramsitters that stimulate a feeding response (THC, for example).  A lack of leptin in the system causes overeating that results in weight gain.  Short term starvation and very low calorie diets cause the levels of leptin in your body to drop.
Leptin tells your brain that the body is satisfied, that energy levels are balanced.  Once the brain stops receiving that signal…yeah, your brain gets bombarded by neurotransmitters telling it to eat.  This is your body’s way of preserving itself.  You need energy to survive, and you get energy from eating.  Your body goes even farther than that and wants to make more fat cells…because fat cells are where leptin comes from.  Science!
Your body won’t start burning more fat due to higher levels of leptin, but once it drops, your appetite is going to increase, and that’s a fact.  I’ve read that carb cycling can help you keep your leptin levels regulated throughout the week.  I don’t know the full details but apparently leptin loves carbs.  Carbs are quicker to regulate leptin than protein or fat, so if you’re on a restricted calorie diet, eat carbs on your cheat day.  Stay within a reasonable calorie intake, but get in some refined carbs, enjoy yourself.
And YEAH, you should have a cheat day.  It’s called refeeding, it’s good for your metabolism, as stated above, because it regulates your leptin and suppreses your appetite.
